The bare numbers are difficult to dress up. Finishing 10th and 7th suggests the horse has been competitive enough to complete, but not yet close enough to threaten the front end of a race. The dash in the form — indicating a fall, unseating, or pulled-up run — adds another question mark. It was racing just one day ago, so the yard are clearly keeping the horse active and looking for a breakthrough.
What works in Davitts Quay's favour is the trainer. Anthony Mullins, based at Gowran in Co Kilkenny, has already sent out 9 winners this season, which suggests a yard in decent form and capable of placing horses in races where they can improve. The horse is only five, which in racing terms means there is still plenty of time to develop. Some horses simply take a while to put it all together, and a trainer who is winning regularly is better placed than most to find the right opportunity when it arrives.
For now, Davitts Quay is a project in progress — a horse that has shown up three times and not yet found its level.
