Darvel

The most striking thing about Darvel is what he does at Chepstow. He has raced there three times and won twice — a remarkable conversion rate for any horse at any track. It was at Chepstow that his career began in earnest, with his first win back in May 2022, and the track clearly suits him. Whether it is the layout, the ground conditions, or simply a happy association, Chepstow seems to bring out the best in him.

Most of Darvel's racing life has been spent at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter end of the sport, where horses compete in smaller, less glamorous races than the headline events. He has won 4 of his 24 races at that level, around 1 in 6, which is perfectly solid without being spectacular. But there is a persistent feeling around the yard that his ability outruns his official rating. Jockey Billy Loughnane put it plainly after riding him at Brighton: trainer Patrick Chamings had told him before the race that Darvel had more talent than his mark suggested — and once Loughnane hit the front, he said, he just knew the horse was not going to stop.

His most recent win came at Salisbury in August 2025, and since then his form has been patchy — a couple of mid-field finishes following two back-to-back wins. That dip is worth keeping in perspective: Chamings has been open about the fact that Darvel found some of his runs during that period tougher when conditions were very wet, and that the horse probably needed a run to get going again after a break. The Baughurst yard has sent out 11 winners already this season, so the operation is in good shape.

His regular partner Hector Crouch has won 2 of their 10 races together — 1 in 5 — and that combination could yet produce more. Darvel is not a superstar, but he is honest, he is experienced, and at Chepstow especially, he has a habit of making people look clever.
