He wins at a 25% rate over a mile and a quarter to a mile and two furlongs—that is 1 win from 4 races at those trips—and he plainly relishes wet or muddy ground. His Doncaster win came on soft ground that other horses found testing; his Goodwood success came on similar terrain where he cruised to the front and galloped out strongly to the line. Teal has said the horse was still on the weak side last season but expected some improvement at four, and his recent return to the track suggests the plan is to place him carefully, hunting for soft ground and longer races where he can settle into his work.

There are warning signs. His form over the past six weeks—a 12th place, then a 4th, two 2nds, a 6th, and a 1st—shows real inconsistency. He has not won since March, five months ago, and raced just a day ago with a 12th-place finish, suggesting he may have encountered ground or conditions that did not suit. But at his best, on a wet track and at the right distance, Dancing Tiger is a horse who knows what he is doing. The challenge for Teal is finding those races often enough to make the most of him.
