What makes the profile a little more complicated is that Dabbling raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in the thick of things. Trainer Ollie Pears, based at Norton in North Yorkshire, clearly hasn't given up on finding the right opportunity. Pears has sent out 13 winners already this season, which shows the yard knows how to get horses to win races — the puzzle is simply finding the right day and the right race for this particular one. The recent form figures of 7-6-9-5-4-5 tell a story of gradual inconsistency, with a mid-season rally toward that fourth place now fading back into mid-division finishes. The horse hasn't been disgraced, but it hasn't threatened to win, either.
At three years old, there is still time for the picture to change. Some horses take a while to work out what is being asked of them, and a young horse with a patient yard behind it isn't a lost cause. But right now, Dabbling is one of those horses that keeps turning up without quite delivering — and until that changes, the profile reads as a work very much in progress.
