What makes this particularly striking is the sheer consistency of the effort without reward. Her regular jockey, Amie Waugh, has ridden her nine times and they haven't won together once. Her trainer, David Thompson, operates out of Bolam in County Durham and is clearly a yard that knows how to win — nine winners on the board this season alone — so it isn't a case of a struggling operation. Curious Mrs Fox just seems to be one of those horses who does everything except cross the line first.
Her recent form reads 6-3-4-8-9-6, which, reading from right to left, shows a horse that was well beaten across several runs before creeping back into contention — a third-place finish two runs ago is genuinely the brightest moment in a tough recent spell. She raced just one day ago, so she is clearly in an active campaign, and the yard will be hoping that a run fresh in her legs translates into something more rewarding next time out.
There is no shame in being a horse like Curious Mrs Fox. Not every runner is destined to win, and for many owners, the pleasure is in the participation — the racecourse atmosphere, the community around the yard, the hope that today might finally be the day. At 28 races and counting, that day hasn't come yet. But she keeps turning up, and in racing, that counts for something.
