Both of Cristo's career wins have come at Chelmsford, and he has finished in the top three there in all three of his visits. That is the kind of record that makes trainers circle a track on the calendar. Chelmsford is an all-weather venue in Essex with a particular synthetic surface that not every horse takes to — Cristo clearly does. Two wins from three visits, with no losing runs in between, suggests this is not coincidence but something more like genuine affinity.
Richard Hannon, who trains Cristo from his yard in Wiltshire, is one of the most prolific handlers in British racing — 118 winners already this season is an extraordinary output, the kind of number that only comes from a very well-run and well-stocked operation. When a trainer of that calibre says a horse is "beginning to look the part" and has "plenty more races to be won with him," it carries weight. Hannon spotted the first win coming — Cristo won at Chelmsford on 18 April 2025, and Hannon was already talking publicly about the horse going further in distance and having more wins in him. Within three weeks, Cristo had won there again on 8 May.
His preferred conditions are worth noting: on normal ground, he has won 2 of his 10 races on that surface — a 20% win rate, which in racing terms is genuinely solid. He also performs best at a mile and three or four furlongs, winning 2 from 7 at those distances, nearly 1 in 3. That combination — a specific track, a specific distance, specific ground — is exactly the kind of profile that patient handlers learn to exploit.
The recent form figures tell a different story. Cristo has not won in his last six races, and his last three finishes — seventh, eighth, third — are up and down. He raced just yesterday, so he is firmly in training and being kept busy. The Chelmsford wins remain the reference point here: when the conditions align, Cristo has shown he can deliver. The question is simply when those conditions next come together.
