The worrying detail is how long it has been since that last win at Wexford. Forty months have passed — more than three years — and in that time Corkbeg has raced 16 times without success. There is no upward trajectory here, no sign of a horse finding his feet. He is being ridden most often by Cian Quirke, but that partnership has yielded nothing — six races, no wins.
Trainer David Harry Kelly, based in Rathvin, County Tipperary, has had a decent season overall with 13 winners from the yard, but Corkbeg is plainly not part of that story. At this stage of his career, the horse appears to be racing for the sake of it rather than with any realistic prospect of another victory. Still active and running regularly, he remains a modest sort — useful enough to keep in work, but unlikely ever to remind his the yard of those two wins that came early in his nine-year racing life.
