What gives the story some shape, though, is who is looking after her. Gordon Elliott's yard in Longwood, Co Meath, is one of the most powerful operations in Irish racing, and this season alone the team has sent out 209 winners — a figure that puts them firmly among the elite yards on either side of the Irish Sea. Having a horse in Elliott's care does not guarantee anything, but it does mean Cool Native is being brought along by people who know exactly what they are doing.
Elliott himself has spoken warmly about her, noting that she works nicely at home and that she showed a good attitude when winning her point-to-point for Denis Murphy. That point win matters — it means she has already demonstrated she can get to the front and fight, even if she has not yet translated that into a result under rules. The plan, according to Elliott, is to point her towards a mares' race on the flat next, which would give her a gentler test and a chance to build some confidence before asking bigger questions of her.
She is six years old, which means there is still time. Some horses take a while to click, and with a trainer sending out winners at the rate Elliott's yard is this season, the hope will be that Cool Native is simply a horse waiting for the right opportunity to show what she can do.
