What makes Comfort Zone tick is wet, muddy ground. On soft or heavy going, the record reads 3 wins from 7 races — that's a 43% win rate, nearly winning every other time out under those conditions. For comparison, on faster ground the record is far less impressive. After a run at Ascot where jockey Tom Marquand felt the ground was simply too quick and firm for him, the picture became clear — this is a horse who wants to be slugging through the mud, not sprinting over a dry surface.

The most recent win came at Naas in October 2024, and racing manager Frank Berry, who looks after the interests of owner JP McManus, described it as a lovely race to win and suggested jumps races over the winter would follow — which tells you something about the sort of programme being planned around this horse.

Current form, though, is a concern. Comfort Zone has not won in six races, and the recent figures — finishing 17th, 10th, 12th, and 3rd in that run — do not suggest a horse on the verge of a comeback win. Regular jockey Simon Torrens has yet to win aboard the horse in six attempts together, which is a notable blank given the horse's overall record. O'Brien's yard is in tremendous shape this season with 160 winners sent out, so the firepower is there — but Comfort Zone itself needs to rediscover the form that made it a Class 1 winner. The talent is documented. The question now is whether the conditions, and a touch of luck, can bring it back to the surface.
