Clover Time

The recent form is actually the most interesting part of the picture. Three consecutive second-place finishes in the middle of those last six runs suggests this is a horse that genuinely competes — it is not finishing last or disappearing into the pack. But converting those near-misses into a win has so far proved elusive, and the two most recent efforts, finishing fifth and eighth, hint that the momentum from that purple patch may be fading. It raced just yesterday, so it is right in the thick of an active campaign.

What makes the record slightly puzzling is the level at which Clover Time is racing. Class 6 is the entry level of British Flat racing — the races where horses are expected to find winning opportunities most accessible. Yet in seven attempts at that level, the win column remains empty. That is not a horse waiting for the right big occasion; it is a horse that has had every opportunity to get off the mark at the easiest level available and has not yet taken one.

Trainer Michael Appleby, based in Oakham, Rutland, is no stranger to winners — his yard has sent out 79 of them this season alone, which shows genuine strength in numbers and a team that clearly knows how to get horses to the line first. That makes Clover Time something of an outlier in the stable. The horse is surrounded by expertise and a winning environment, and at some point Appleby will presumably find the right race and the right conditions to unlock whatever is keeping this horse just short of the mark. For now, though, Clover Time remains one of racing's most persistent nearly-horses — always there, never quite there enough.
