Classy Al

Jim Goldie trains out of Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, and his operation is in seriously good form right now — 88 winners already this season, which puts the yard among the busiest and most productive in the north. Goldie has a personal connection to Classy Al that goes beyond most trainer-horse relationships: he trained both the horse's mother and grandmother. That history doesn't automatically make training him easy, though. Goldie has spoken openly about the horse being tricky — he once deposited jockey Paul Mulrennan on the ground just walking to the start. There's clearly a character in there. But Goldie's verdict is blunt and telling: "he has an engine." From a trainer who knows the family bloodline going back two generations, that's worth listening to.

Mulrennan is very much the man for this horse. In 22 races together they've won 5 times — a win rate of 23%, or almost 1 in every 4 rides. That's a notably better return than Classy Al's overall career average, and it speaks to the kind of partnership that takes time to build. The horse has also shown a clear preference for normal ground conditions, winning 6 of his 21 races on a standard surface — that's nearly 1 in 3, which is a genuinely strong record and worth bearing in mind when conditions are right.

Hamilton Park is where Classy Al has looked most at home, winning twice from 7 visits there. His last win came at Hamilton as recently as July 2025, and he raced just one day ago, so the legs are still warm. The recent form figures — a string of mid-field finishes — tell a story of a horse who hasn't quite clicked in his last six outings, but an active, well-trained horse with a course he loves nearby is never entirely out of the picture. At Class 5 level, where he wins roughly 1 in 5 races, a return to form at a track that suits him is far from out of the question.
