Chourmo

The overall numbers — 4 wins and 13 places from 36 races, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 9 — tell the story of a horse that competes at the bottom end of the sport, mostly in Class 6 races, which are the entry-level contests where horses are evenly matched and winning is genuinely hard. Within that context, winning 14% of those races (3 from 22) is respectable, and the Brighton dominance lifts the whole picture considerably. Chourmo also performs notably better on decent or dry ground: 2 wins from 7 races on normal conditions and 2 from 10 on fast, dry ground suggest this is not a horse that wants to be asked to dig through mud.

The partnership with jockey J F Egan is worth noting. Together they have won 4 of their 16 races — that's 1 in every 4, a meaningfully better rate than Chourmo achieves with anyone else. When Egan is in the saddle and the ground is dry, this horse becomes a different proposition. Horsford's yard has sent out 6 winners this season, so there is form in the operation.

The honest caveat is that Chourmo hasn't won in its last 6 races, and the most recent victory came at Newmarket in November 2024 — 18 months ago now. The recent form figures of 5-3-4-6-5-5 show a horse finishing in the middle of the pack rather than threatening the front. Whether a return to Brighton on suitable ground can unlock another win is the interesting question hanging over this horse's immediate future. It has done it three times before, which is more than most can say.
