Chillingham

Chillingham has been competing almost exclusively at Class 2 level — one of the top tiers in Britain — and has yet to win there in 15 attempts. That is a tough neighbourhood for any horse to operate in, and it explains why the overall record looks leaner than the horse perhaps deserves. Where things get interesting is on wet ground. In normal conditions or on fast, dry ground, Chillingham is a solid contender without quite delivering. Flip that to soft or muddy ground and the numbers change sharply: 2 wins from 7 races, which is winning roughly 1 in every 3 attempts. That is a genuinely significant difference, and trainer Micky Hammond — who has sent out 25 winners from his Middleham yard already this season — clearly knows it.

The most recent win came at York in what Hammond himself describes as a strange fashion: Chillingham crossed the line and the original winner was disqualified for whip overuse, handing the race to his horse. It sounds like a lucky break, but Hammond is quick to point out that Chillingham had always looked capable of winning a race of that quality. The visor the horse wore that day is now a keeper. The wrinkle is that the ratings assessors noticed immediately, and Chillingham now sits on a mark of 96 — high enough that Hammond is thinking carefully about where to run next. His instinct is to drop back to a mile and a quarter, feeling that the longer trips around a mile and six furlongs stretch Chillingham beyond his comfort zone, even though the stats show 2 wins from 11 races at that distance.

Most recently ridden by Callum Rodriguez — who has partnered the horse to 1 win in 9 races together — Chillingham last raced just yesterday and has not won in six outings. The last winning date on the card before York was April 2023, so it had been a long wait. Whether a higher rating, shorter trips, and a visor locked in the kit bag is the recipe for more wins is the question Hammond is now working through.
