Chesneys Charm

The breakthrough came at Chelmsford last August, and since then he has found his stride. Most tellingly, he won at York in July on normal ground over seven furlongs with blinkers on—his first win in over a year. That race revealed something important: the horse had been running around in the wrong trip. Ivan Furtado's yard at Wiseton has been experimenting, trying distances from a mile to further, and finally cracked it by dropping back to seven furlongs. At that distance on normal ground, Chesneys Charm wins at a rate of nearly one in every two races (4 wins from 9)—a staggering contrast to his overall record. The blinkers, suggested by his regular rider Oliver Stammers during work at home, made a difference too.

The puzzle is not entirely solved. His recent six races show no wins, with placings mixed in but form generally drifting. Last week he ran well at Southwell over a mile in a competitive race, proof that he remains capable, but the pattern suggests he is at his best when conditions align: seven furlongs or a mile, normal ground, and perhaps those blinkers keeping his mind focused. Furtado's plan is to return him to seven furlongs at softer tracks like Carlisle and Ayr, where the ground might also suit him—he has won three times from seven races on wet or muddy ground. For a horse without the engine to dominate, Chesneys Charm is a study in finding the right environment and holding his ground there.
