Four wins and nine places from 24 races, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 6 outings, with the standout moment coming at Cheltenham in October 2022 — one of the top races in Britain and Ireland. That kind of result does not happen by accident. Elliott noted afterwards that Chemical Energy was warming up as the race went on and that the longer the trip, the better he would be. The further he went, the more he had to give. That is a rare and useful quality.

The key to unlocking him has always been the ground. On normal conditions he has won 4 of his 8 races — a remarkable 50% record that makes him look like a completely different horse when the track suits him. Elliott has been clear about this: Chemical Energy wants decent ground, not heavy or wet underfoot, and when he gets it, he performs. When Davy Russell has been in the saddle on the right day, the combination has produced 3 wins from just 5 rides together — three wins from five is the kind of ratio most partnerships would dream about.

The last 6 races have not produced a win, and the most recent victory was 43 months ago, which is a long gap by any measure. But the story does not end there. Just last week, Chemical Energy got his head back in front in an open point-to-point, and Elliott spoke about how much that would have meant to the horse's confidence. The yard is now pointing him towards hunter chases — a slightly different path, and one that could suit a horse who has always needed a long trip and decent ground to show his best. At 10 years old, with a Cheltenham win already on his record and a trainer who clearly believes there is more to come, Chemical Energy is not finished yet.
