His early career was something else. He won on debut at Wolverhampton in November 2021, then followed it up by bolting up in a top-level Listed race at Newcastle in April 2022 — and Knight was candid that even he was surprised by the manner of that victory. The talk turned immediately to the 2,000 Guineas, one of Britain's most prestigious races, and for good reason. Knight described Checkandchallenge as a horse who still had improvement to come, that the Newcastle win wasn't even the finished product. Unfortunately, the Guineas itself was a disaster before it started — wiped out at the start, lost his action, and the chance was gone before the race had really begun. It's the kind of thing that can derail a young horse's momentum entirely, and in Checkandchallenge's case, it seems to have done exactly that.
He did find his way back to the top level, though. His second Class 1 win came at Newmarket in November 2023, and Knight was bullish afterwards — pointing out that his horse had finished fourth in a Group One at Ascot not long before and had good horses behind him. Two wins at the highest level in Britain from 27 races at that grade is a 7% return, which sounds modest, but most horses never get close to that company at all. The problem is that win at Newmarket is now 31 months ago, and his last six races have produced nothing better than a third place.
Jockey Callum Shepherd has partnered him most often, riding him in 12 of his 31 races for a single win together. The current form figures — 6-10-9-3-6-3 — suggest a horse who is competitive without quite finding the finishing kick he once had. William Knight's yard has been in good form this season, sending out 28 winners, so the support is there. Whether Checkandchallenge, who raced just yesterday, can rediscover what made him so exciting in those early months remains the question.
