Charcon

Charcon has had a short break of 43 days since its last race, which is worth noting. Trainers do not always spell horses out for nothing — sometimes a little time away is exactly what a young horse needs to mature, strengthen, or simply switch off and reset. Whether that proves to be the case here remains to be seen.

The horse is trained by Ben Haslam at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire, one of the great racing villages in England, perched high on the moors with a history stretching back centuries. Haslam's yard has sent out 32 winners this season, which shows this is a trainer who knows how to get horses to perform. That context matters: Charcon has not delivered yet, but it is in capable hands with a team that clearly knows how to find the right opportunities for its horses. The question is whether Charcon can eventually justify their patience.
