Chapel Green

The trainer Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, operating out of their yard in Milnathort, clearly know exactly where this horse belongs. He has spent the bulk of his career in Class 4 company — a solid working level of British racing, several rungs below the top tier — and at that level he has won 5 from 17, which is almost 1 in 3. That is a horse placed carefully and campaigned intelligently. The yard has already sent out 49 winners this season alone, so Chapel Green is part of a genuinely productive operation.

What really sets him apart is Kelso. The Scottish track has become something of a home from home: 3 wins from 8 races there, which means he has won more than a third of his career wins at a single venue. His first win came at Kelso in November 2022, and his most recent — just eight months ago — came there too. Some horses simply suit a track's layout, its undulations, its bends. Whatever it is about Kelso, Chapel Green finds it in himself there.

He also has a clear preference for wet or muddy ground, winning 2 from 7 races in those conditions — nearly 1 in 3 — and travels best over distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, again winning at roughly the same rate. His most frequent partner in the saddle is Stephen Mulqueen, who has ridden him in 10 of his races and won 2 of them, a 1-in-5 return that mirrors the horse's overall record.

Recent form shows a win three runs back, and he raced just yesterday — so this is a horse very much in active training and still competing. At nine, many horses start to wind down. Chapel Green shows no sign of it.
