Chantilly Wings

The recent form is more encouraging, at least on the surface. Over the last six races, Chantilly Wings has put together a sequence of 3-2-5-4-3-4 — that's two second-place finishes in the last half-dozen outings. The horse was last in action just a day ago and is still competing, so there is clearly some racing left in it. But here is the thing: those seconds are the horse's ceiling. It finishes second and then goes home. It hasn't crossed the line first once, and with each race that streak grows longer and harder to break.

Cian Collins trains at Navan, in County Meath, and has had a productive season — the yard has sent out twenty winners. That's a solid operation, which means Chantilly Wings is being trained competently. It's just that no amount of competent training has been able to find the button that turns near-misses into victories. For a horse to have raced eight times without a win, something is missing — whether that's raw pace, the right conditions, the right race, or simply luck remains unclear. Right now, Chantilly Wings is a horse with potential that never quite delivers.
