What makes Cerberus a curious case is that there were, at one point, genuine expectations attached to him. His trainer noted early on that he had been a bit disappointing, and floated the idea of trying him over longer distances to unlock something. His jockey Robbie Power, after a run at Chepstow, was actually quite upbeat — pointing out that the winner that day was a good horse and that Cerberus had "run a blinder", struggling only because the ground was wet and muddy, and that he simply isn't a big horse built for those conditions. That kind of nuance matters: sometimes a horse's record looks worse than the performances actually were.
Further back, trainer Joseph O'Brien spoke glowingly after a win that apparently came before the current run of form — describing how Cerberus handled tricky ground, how impressed he was, and even floating the idea of a Grade 3 race at the Winter Festival. That those ambitions never quite materialised helps explain how a horse that once had a trainer excited can end up with a blank win column across two dozen races. Racing has a way of humbling early promise.
At ten years old, still turning out and still being campaigned, Cerberus is nothing if not durable. He is not the headline act, but he keeps
