The recent form makes for difficult reading. Over the last six races, the best result has been a fourth, sandwiched between two fifth-place finishes and a pair of eleventh-place runs. That fourth is the closest this horse has come to giving the yard — sorry, giving trainer Michael Mulvany and his team — anything to celebrate. It has not finished in the money in any of its 10 career races, which at this stage of a horse's development is a significant hurdle to clear.
Wesley Joyce has been in the saddle for five of those ten races and is yet to get a tune out of the horse, with no wins from their five attempts together. That said, Mulvany's yard at Kells in County Meath is clearly a functioning operation — 20 winners sent out this season suggests a stable that knows what it is doing. The puzzle is simply why this particular horse has not found a way to translate that into any kind of result on a racecourse.
At three years old there is still time, technically. But a horse that has run ten times without placing needs something to change — a different trip, different ground, a different draw — or the patience of the yard will eventually run out. For now, the name Cause I Like You feels less like a statement of affection and more like a quiet act of faith.
