Since then, though, it's been a different story. Cartwheel hasn't won in its last six races, with recent finishes of 9th, 7th, 6th, and 13th doing little to build on that Kempton breakthrough. A win rate of 10% — one from ten — is modest, and the recent form doesn't flatter. But the context matters: this is a horse that has spent most of its career running in Class 2 company, which is tough. Winning one from three at that level (roughly a 33% win rate in those races specifically) is actually a more encouraging number than the overall record suggests.

The sweet spot, distance-wise, appears to be somewhere between seven furlongs and a mile. Cartwheel has won one from four races at those distances — 25% — which is a notably better return than its record across the board. For a horse still only four years old with room to develop, that kind of pattern is worth filing away.

Dylan Cunha trains the yard at Newmarket, one of British racing's most famous bases, and it's been a productive season — 45 winners sent out, which speaks to a stable in decent form. A trainer operating at that volume isn't sending horses out to make up the numbers. Cartwheel raced just yesterday, so it's clearly being kept busy, and there's an obvious target on the horizon: a return to Kempton, the one track where this horse has already shown it can win at a meaningful level. Sometimes that's all the story you need.
