The level Carida competes at — Class 5, among the most modest races in the British racing calendar — is worth noting. These are races specifically designed to give horses a chance to win, and Carida has not been able to take advantage across three attempts at that level. When a horse cannot find its way to the front at the lowest tier of competition, it is a sign that the yard need to find a different angle, whether that is a change of distance, a different surface, or simply more time.
Simon West trains out of Middleham in North Yorkshire, one of British racing's great training centres, tucked into the Yorkshire Dales. His yard has sent out five winners this season, so the horses around Carida are clearly capable of getting the job done. That makes Carida something of an outlier in the string at the moment. There is still time — four-year-olds can take a while to find their feet — but right now, Carida needs something to click, and quickly.
