Captain Robert

That big moment came at Chelmsford on 11 December 2025, and it was well earned. Captain Robert tends to be at his best over longer distances — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — and across five races at those trips he has won 1 in every 5, which is a meaningfully better return than his overall record suggests. Stick him over a shorter distance and you are not playing to his strengths. Give him the room to stretch out and a different horse emerges.

He competes mostly at Class 5, the entry level of British racing, and has won 1 from 5 at that level — again, 1 in every 5. That is a decent return for the grade, and it tells you he is competitive on his day, just not yet the horse who dominates a race from the front. His recent form reads 3-4-3-6-1-2 going back through his last six runs, which is actually an encouraging sequence: two wins or near-misses bookending a dip in the middle. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much in the thick of things right now.

James Fanshawe trains him out of Newmarket, one of British racing's great headquarters, and the yard has been in fine form this season with 47 winners already on the board. That is a productive operation, and the fact that Captain Robert earned his first win under their care suggests the team has found something that works for him. His regular rider George Wood has not yet broken his duck on the horse across five attempts together, but given the recent upturn in form, that partnership could yet produce results. For a horse who took 12 races to get off the mark, Captain Robert looks like he might finally be finding his feet.
