The other thing that brings the best out of Captain Conby is wet weather. On soft, muddy ground he has won 2 of just 3 races — that's a two-in-three success rate, which is extraordinary by any measure. When the rain comes down and the ground gets heavy, he transforms into a different proposition entirely. His regular partner Kevin Sexton seems to know how to get the best from him too: together they have won 2 from 7 races, roughly 1 in every 3, which is a significantly better return than the horse manages with other riders.
The honest truth, though, is that Captain Conby has been waiting a while for his next win. His last victory came at Killarney in August 2023 — nearly three years ago now — and when he has been tested at the very top level, in Class 1 races, he has come up short in all four attempts. His recent form shows a third place and a second tucked in among less encouraging results, so the finishing efforts are still there. He raced just yesterday, which means he is right in the thick of his season. Whether he can recapture the winner's enclosure probably depends on finding the right combination: Punchestown, soft ground, and Sexton in the saddle.
