That suggests this is where he is most dangerous — quick enough to be competitive, but long enough for him to really stretch out. His trainer Andrew Crook, based in Coverham in North Yorkshire, was already thinking further ahead before Captain Bruce's Newcastle win in October, noting that he suspected the horse would want a longer trip over time. So it came as a mild surprise when jockey Alex Jary reported after that Newcastle victory that he had seen the seven furlongs out well — and Jary's assessment was telling. He told Sky Sports Racing that Captain Bruce is "a grand little horse" who had taken time to come good, and that he thought there was a nice horse to look forward to in the season ahead.

That win at Newcastle, on an all-weather track in early October 2025, was his second of the year following a first career success at Chelmsford in August. Both wins have come at Class 6 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — but within that grade he has been formidable, winning 2 of just 4 races, which is a 50% win rate. That kind of record at his level is exactly what you want to see from a young horse still learning the game.

His recent form figures of 9-12-9-6-1-5 tell the broader story: mid-pack finishes bookending that one sharp win. He has not won since October, which is now seven months ago, and the trainer's yard has sent out only two winners this season. But he raced just yesterday, so he is clearly in active training and being kept busy. Whether Captain Bruce is simply taking more time to mature — as Jary hinted — or whether he needs things to fall exactly right, the next few months should start to answer that question.
