The recent form tells a mixed story. A couple of third-place finishes in the last six races show Canaria Sun can get competitive, but a couple of results deep in the field — finishing tenth and eleventh — are harder to overlook. That range, from podium finishes to near the back of the pack, is the hallmark of a horse that hasn't quite found its rhythm or its ideal conditions yet.
What makes this slightly surprising is the stable behind it. Tim Easterby's Great Habton operation is one of the busiest and most productive yards in the north of England, having sent out 126 winners already this season — a serious number that reflects a well-oiled set-up with real strength in depth. When a yard is firing at that level, a horse with zero wins from ten races does stand out. Canaria Sun has done most of its racing at the lowest tier of the sport, Class 6, where the competition is at its least demanding — and it has still not managed to win any of its four races at that level. That is not a damning verdict, but it does raise a genuine question about when, or whether, the breakthrough will come.
Raced just yesterday and therefore very much in active training, Canaria Sun is clearly not a horse anyone has given up on. Easterby's team keeps running it, and in a yard producing winners at a rate of knots this season, there will presumably be a plan. Whether that plan pays off is the question worth watching.
