Callero

To be fair, Callero is operating at Class 4, which is the everyday, bread-and-butter level of racing rather than anything elite, so the expectation is that horses at this tier are winnable races with the right run on the right day. That day has not arrived yet. Six races is still a relatively small sample for a young horse finding its feet, but there is nothing in the current form to suggest a breakthrough is imminent.

The one genuinely encouraging element here is where Callero is trained. Gary and Josh Moore's yard at Lower Beeding in West Sussex has fired out 94 winners already this season — that is a seriously productive operation, and horses in their care tend to be placed and managed thoughtfully. When a stable of that quality keeps running a horse, it usually means they see something worth persevering with. Whether Callero can reward that patience is the open question. Having raced 27 days ago, another run should be coming soon, and at some point the form has to turn — though racing has a habit of humbling that kind of optimism.
