It is a pattern of inconsistency typical of a young horse still finding its way, with flashes of form sandwiched between disappointing runs. Trainer James Owen, who is based at Newmarket and runs one of the season's more prolific yards with 205 winners already, will be hoping those two better finishes represent Callahan settling into a rhythm rather than a false dawn. The horse clearly has some ability — winning at Kempton showed that — but has yet to prove it can do so regularly enough to become a serious proposition.
