Calibos

The key to unlocking Calibos appears to be distance. Over a mile and three to four furlongs — a proper middle-distance trip that asks horses to stay and grind — he has won 1 from 7 races, a 14% win rate. That is more than twice his overall average, which tells you something meaningful: he needs a test. Give him a shorter trip and he is treading water. Give him room to run and he comes alive.

His trainer Jo Davis, based at East Garston in Berkshire, has noticed the same thing. After stepping him up in trip, she saw immediate improvement, though he ran into a smart rival at Wolverhampton recently — one of Sir Mark Prescott's horses, a trainer known for placing his horses with pinpoint precision — so that defeat says less about Calibos than it might appear. Davis is also encouraged by how he has physically developed, and believes there is more to come as the season progresses. The yard has sent out 3 winners this season, and Calibos is part of a syndicate ownership group, meaning a small army of people are following his career and hoping for a good summer.

His recent form reads 3-3-3-10-dash-3, which is consistently close without quite getting over the line. He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly a horse being kept busy and in good heart. The Windsor win back in July 2025 showed he can do it at Class 6 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — and at the right trip, on the right day, there is no obvious reason he cannot do it again. For the syndicate backing him, that is exactly the kind of project worth following.
