Cahier's Den

The recent form tells a familiar story. Looking at the last six outings, there is a second place in there, along with a third, but also a pair of sixths — so the performances have been patchy rather than consistently close. Jockey Theo Gillard has been in the saddle for seven of those races together and is still searching for that breakthrough win, which suggests this is a partnership that has built up plenty of experience without yet finding the combination to unlock a result.

Trainer Donald McCain is a well-established name in the north of England, operating out of Cholmondeley in Cheshire, and the yard has been in decent form this season — 55 winners is a healthy total that shows the horses coming out of there are capable of winning races. That makes Cahier's Den something of an outlier in the string, a horse that has so far resisted converting its placings into victories at Class 4 level, which is solidly mid-tier racing — not the very top of the sport, but not the easy end either. Going 0 wins from 8 races at that level is a stat that raises the obvious question of whether a drop in class might finally be the nudge this horse needs. At some point, a trainer like McCain will be asking exactly that.

Having raced just yesterday, Cahier's Den is very much an active, ongoing project rather than a horse winding down. There is still time to turn the page on that zero in the wins column — but for now, it remains one of those horses that seems to enjoy the occasion a little more than the finishing line.
