Bystander

The overall numbers are more modest: 2 wins and 5 places from 16 races, which works out to winning roughly 1 in every 8 times out. That's not eye-catching on paper, but it doesn't tell the full story. When Bystander is sent to Newcastle and given a trip of around a mile to a mile and a quarter, the picture looks quite different. At that distance, the horse has won 1 in every 5 races — and both career victories have come at Newcastle specifically, the first in December 2023 and the second in June 2024.

The problem is that the last win was 22 months ago, and the recent form reads 5-13-8-3-7-9 — meaning a fifth place is the best result across the last six races, with a couple of those efforts well down the field. The 6-year-old is clearly in a difficult patch. That said, Bystander raced just yesterday, so the team at Stuart Williams's Newmarket yard are clearly keeping the horse busy and looking for the right opportunity. Williams has sent out 69 winners this season, so this is a yard that knows how to place a horse when the conditions suit.

The most interesting subplot here is the partnership with jockey Clifford Lee. In six races together, they've won twice — that's a win rate of 33%, or 1 in every 3 rides. For comparison, the horse's overall win rate is 1 in 8. Whatever it is that Lee brings out in Bystander, the numbers suggest it's real. If that combination lines up at Newcastle over the right trip, it would be foolish to ignore them — even if the recent run of results makes it easy to do exactly that.
