Bunker Bay

That one win came at Great Yarmouth back in July 2023, now nearly three years ago, and it remains the high point of a career that has otherwise been defined by near-misses and mid-pack finishes. His recent form — finishing eighth, second, third, sixth, third, and sixth across his last six races — shows a horse still placing occasionally, still in the mix, but not quite finding that extra gear when it matters. He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly a fit and active horse, and Micky Hammond's yard in Middleham has been in decent nick this season with 24 winners, which offers at least some optimism.

Interestingly, Bunker Bay does show a preference for longer distances. Over a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four furlongs, he has won 1 from 9 races — roughly 11% — which might not sound dramatic, but it stands out clearly against the rest of his record. In a distance range where he simply doesn't fancy the trip, he barely registers. At least over those middle-to-staying trips, he gives himself a chance. The trouble is that most of his career has been spent at Class 5 level, the lower end of the racing ladder, where he has won just 1 from 18 races at around a 6% rate. That's honest, bread-and-butter racing, but it means he hasn't been tested at higher levels where the picture might look different — or might look very similar.

Jockey Aiden Brookes has partnered him six times without a win between them. That's not necessarily a crisis — plenty of good partnerships take time — but it hasn't sparked anything yet. Bunker Bay is one of those horses who earns his keep through consistency rather than brilliance, a reliable presence in the field who the trainer clearly has genuine affection for. Whether a second win is coming at this stage of his career is the question, and right now, the answer is far from obvious.
