His trainer believes he wants a mile and prefers soft or muddy ground, and the horse's performances are starting to bear that out. David Allan, who rides him most often, reported after a recent win at Hamilton that the horse is only now revealing what his ideal distance might be. Allan had initially thought Bubbles Wonky wanted something shorter, but was surprised by how strongly the horse traveled over slightly further ground, quickening rapidly when pushed. The puzzle is that Bubbles Wonky has never won in a top-tier race. He is zero from six in Class 1 or 2 company, which tells you he belongs in slightly lower-grade contests for now. But he is reliably placed, finishing second or third in the majority of his races, and with a trainer who seems to understand his preferences, he looks ready to win more often in the races where he is entered to compete.
