Brucejack

His most recent win came at Down Royal just three weeks ago — and the fact that it arrived more than three years after his first career win at Ballinrobe in April 2023 gives you a sense of how hard-earned these moments are. Down Royal is one of Ireland's more respected tracks, and getting a win there at nine is no small thing. It suggests the horse has retained enough ability to trouble the line when conditions suit him.

Recent form reads 7-1-5-8-–-6 over the last six runs, which is a mixed picture at best. The "1" in that sequence is the Down Royal win, and the gap in the middle indicates a missed run at some point. The results either side of that win are modest, which is fairly typical for a horse operating at this level — competitive some days, outpaced on others. He raced just yesterday, which means he is being kept busy by trainer P A Fahy, whose yard in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, has sent out nine winners this season. That is a yard in decent form, and the fact they are running Brucejack regularly suggests they believe there is still a race to be won with him.

Michael O'Sullivan has ridden him in six of his races and partnered him to one win — a win rate of around 1 in 6 together, which is actually a better return than the horse's overall record suggests. That combination clearly has some chemistry worth noting.

Brucejack is not a horse you would frame on your wall, but he is exactly the kind of honest, durable animal that gives racing much of its everyday texture — turning up, trying hard, and every now and then producing the moment that makes it all worthwhile.
