Brave Soldier

That sequence suggests a horse who turns up, competes to a point, but hasn't found whatever it takes to land a race. At six years old, with 11 races behind him and none won, the window for a breakthrough is narrowing rather than widening.

Phillip Enright has been the regular partner, riding Brave Soldier in five of those races without a win between them — though it would be unfair to pin that on the jockey when the horse's overall record tells the same tale regardless of who's in the saddle. The pair simply haven't clicked in a way that's produced results, and five races together is a decent enough sample to say that with some confidence.

The yard behind him belongs to Mark Michael McNiff, based in Strandhill on the west coast of Co. Sligo — not one of the powerhouse operations in Irish racing, but a trainer who has sent out five winners already this season, which shows the team knows how to get a horse to win. The fact that Brave Soldier hasn't been one of them is not for lack of trying. McNiff's winners elsewhere this season actually make Brave Soldier's blank record stand out a little more starkly.

Still racing and currently active, Brave Soldier hasn't been written off just yet. Sometimes a horse finds its moment late, in the right conditions on the right day. But honestly, based on what we know, the most realistic hope for now is another place finish — and perhaps, eventually, that one race where everything finally goes right.
