Bold Light

The headline stat is this: Bold Light has raced at Kelso three times and won twice. That kind of record at a specific track — two wins from three visits — isn't luck, it's a pattern. Something about that course clearly suits this horse, whether it's the layout, the ground, or simply the level of competition it tends to face there. Its most recent win came at Kelso on 1 March 2025, a Class 2 race, which is one of the better grades of racing in Britain. Winning two Class 2 races in the space of three months, as Bold Light did between January and March 2025, suggests a horse operating right at the level it belongs.

Those two wins — at Musselburgh on New Year's Day 2025 and then at Kelso two months later — represent a purple patch that any trainer would be pleased with. Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore, who run a busy and successful yard up in Milnathort in Perth and Kinross, have sent out 49 winners this season alone, so they clearly know how to place a horse to its best advantage. Bold Light looks like a horse they've figured out.

The regular partnership with jockey Alan Doyle is worth noting too. In nine races together, Doyle has ridden Bold Light to 2 wins — a win rate of around 1 in 4.5 rides, or roughly 22%. That's a meaningfully better ratio than Bold Light manages with other riders, which suggests the two have developed a genuine understanding.

The one caveat is that Bold Light hasn't won in its last six races, and it's been fifteen months since that last victory at Kelso. The form figures from its most recent six runs read 3-4-3-–-–-4, which shows it's placing consistently without quite getting back to the winner's enclosure. At nine years old, it may be that Bold Light needs everything to fall just right — specifically, a return to Kelso — to rediscover its best.
