Epsom is one of the more unusual tracks in Britain — famously undulating and tricky to ride — so winning there is not something any horse manages by accident. It is a detail worth remembering. The horse has not won since, now a gap of around 20 months, though it has continued to race and place, suggesting it remains competitive rather than simply making up the numbers.

The 7-furlong to 1-mile trip seems to suit Bold Impact best. Over those distances it has won 1 from 6 races — roughly 1 in 6 — which is a meaningful pointer. At the Class 4 level where it typically competes, the record reads 1 win from 4 races, or 1 in 4, which is actually a respectable return at that grade. The recent form figures are mixed — a fourth and an eighteenth feature alongside some blanks — and the horse raced just yesterday, so it is firmly in the middle of its season rather than being readied for something specific.

Behind Bold Impact is trainer Rod Millman, based in Kentisbeare, Devon, which is about as far from the big racing centres as you can get in England. That has never stopped Millman from producing results — the yard has sent out 42 winners already this season, which for a relatively small operation in the West Country is a serious number. Millman tends to place his horses carefully and patiently, and Bold Impact looks exactly like the kind of project his yard does quietly well: a horse with a bit of ability, placed at a realistic level, kept ticking over until the right race comes along. Whether that next win arrives soon is the open question, but this is not a horse that has run out of chances just yet.
