Blue Indigo

The recent run of form tells a familiar tale. Going back through the last six outings, the results read fifth, third, eighth, and three races without even a placed finish. That third place is the closest Blue Indigo has come to a moment of real reward, and it suggests the ability is somewhere in there — just not quite enough to get over the line. At Class 4, which sits in the middle tier of British racing, Blue Indigo has had five chances and drawn a blank in all of them. That level is competitive without being elite, which makes the absence of a win harder to explain away.

Jockey Edward Austin has partnered Blue Indigo six times, and the pair are yet to find the winner's enclosure together. That is a significant chunk of the horse's career to share without a breakthrough, and it raises the natural question of whether a change of tactics, conditions, or rider might shake something loose. Trainer Gary Rutherford, based in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, has had seven winners from his yard this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses winning. Blue Indigo, so far, has just not been one of them.

What keeps the story interesting is that Blue Indigo is still active — racing yesterday is as current as it gets — and six is not an old age for a horse. Some take longer to click than others. But 11 races without a win is a significant wait, and the pattern of recent form, drifting towards the back of the field more often than not, does not immediately suggest a breakthrough is imminent. For now, Blue Indigo remains one of racing's more stubborn puzzles: a horse in a yard that wins races, with a jockey who rides regularly, competing at a reachable level — and yet the winner's photo remains elusive.
