Blackijo Dagrostis

The recent form tells an interesting story. In its last six races, Blackijo Dagrostis has finished third, third, third, fourth, and fifth — a sequence that reads like a horse that has found a comfortable spot just off the pace and decided to stay there. Three consecutive thirds is actually a sign of consistency, just not the kind anyone is celebrating. It ran just yesterday, so this is very much a horse in active campaign, being kept busy by a team that clearly believes a breakthrough could come.

The partnership with jockey Stan Sheppard, who has ridden the horse in 10 of its 14 races, has yet to produce a win — 0 from 10 together is a difficult record to look past. That said, the Sheppard yard has sent out seven winners this season, so the talent is clearly there. It is worth noting that Blackijo Dagrostis has done all its racing at Class 5, which is the entry-level tier of British racing — these are not the toughest fields in the sport. The fact that it has not won from eight races at that level is the most honest measure of where it currently stands.

None of this makes Blackijo Dagrostis uninteresting — quite the opposite. A horse that keeps finishing in the top four without winning is a puzzle, and puzzles have a way of keeping people hooked. Whether that first win eventually comes or not, the Sheppard team keeps running it, and it keeps showing up. Sometimes that is the story worth telling.
