Black Velvet Boy

The horse made its debut with a win at Beverley on 28 July, then backed that up with another victory just three weeks later at Windsor on 17 August — barely a week ago. This is exactly the trajectory trainers dream about: early success followed by immediate success again, rather than a flash-in-the-pan debut win. The fact that it has already placed in three of its four races shows it is competitive even when it doesn't win, which points to a horse that knows how to get itself into a race and finish in the mix. John and Sean Quinn's Norton yard in North Yorkshire has been in excellent form this season with 44 winners already, so Black Velvet Boy is being trained by people who know how to bring young horses along properly.

Having raced just a day ago, it is clearly being kept active and campaigned with purpose. At two years old with a record like this, Black Velvet Boy looks like a horse worth following. It has the wins to prove it belongs in better races, the consistency to suggest those wins were no fluke, and a yard behind it that backs their good horses. How far it can go depends on how much improvement is left in it, but so far everything about this young horse is pointing upwards.
