Black Cuillin

Trained by Craig Lidster at his yard in Norton, North Yorkshire, Black Cuillin at least has a solid base behind it. Lidster's team has sent out 20 winners already this season, which shows this is an operation that knows how to get horses ready to perform. The fact that Black Cuillin hasn't converted that support into a result yet isn't necessarily a red flag at this stage — two-year-olds are still learning their job, and some take longer than others to put it all together.

What is worth watching is that Black Cuillin raced just one day ago, so this is very much a horse in the middle of its campaign. Three consistent runs without a breakthrough can sometimes be the pattern that precedes a first win — the pieces are clearly there, given it keeps finishing in roughly the same position. Whether that fourth-place ceiling eventually breaks is the question Lidster's team will be hoping to answer soon.
