What makes Big Island interesting is his clear affection for Galway. He has won twice there from four races at the track — a 50 per cent win rate that stands out dramatically against his overall record. For some horses, a particular track just suits them, and Galway is clearly where Big Island performs at his best. He also shows some preference for middle-distance races between 1 mile 1 furlong and 1 mile 2 furlongs, where he has won 1 of 7 outings, a better rate than his career average.

Danny Mullins, who rides the horse most often, has partnered him in 11 races and won once together — slightly better than Big Island's overall record but hardly a standout partnership. At nine years old and without a win in nearly four years, Big Island is very much in the veteran stage of his racing life. But his Galway record suggests there is still a race in him waiting to happen, should he return to the track where he has shown he can find the line.
