Big Gypsy King

Trained by James Moffatt out of Cartmel in Cumbria, Big Gypsy King opened his account at Chelmsford in May 2025, then added a second win back at Cartmel on 28 June — just three weeks ago. That Cartmel victory is worth noting. Cartmel is a tight, quirky little track tucked into the Lake District, and it rewards horses that have learned its particular rhythms. Winning there for a yard that is literally based on the same site suggests this is a horse being placed very cleverly by a trainer who knows exactly what suits him. Moffatt's yard has sent out 11 winners already this season, so this is clearly a team in decent form.

The most interesting number in Big Gypsy King's record is his performance over longer distances — races of two miles or more. At that trip, he has won 1 from 5, which is a 20% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 5 attempts. That might not sound dramatic, but it compares very favourably to his overall record and points clearly to where he is most comfortable. Horses that find their best form when the race is truly run over a test of stamina often improve with age as they fill out physically, and at four years old, Big Gypsy King may still have room to develop.

His recent form reads 7-1-4-8-9-8 — a win sandwiched between some less inspiring efforts. He has raced just yesterday, which means he is currently being kept busy. The challenge now is whether Moffatt can keep finding the right opportunities at the right distance to bring out that 1-in-5 version of this horse, rather than the one that finishes towards the back of the field. At Class 6 level — the entry level of British racing — he has won 1 from 6 at a rate of around 17%, which is perfectly respectable. He is not a horse built for the big occasions, but in the right race, on a track his trainer understands intimately, Big Gypsy King has quietly shown he can get the job done.
