The recent form paints a mixed picture. Looking at the last six races, the sequence reads 6-7-3-2 with a couple of other runs in between, and that third and second place finish in there are encouraging signs that Benignitas can get involved in a finish. The trouble is it hasn't been able to build on those moments, and the most recent run — just yesterday — produced a sixth place. At nine, you do begin to wonder whether a breakthrough win is still coming or whether the horse has simply found its level.
That level appears to be Class 5, the lower end of the racing ladder, where Benignitas has run three times without winning. Even in that company, converting a place into a victory has proved one step too far. Trainer Gordon Treacy, based at Higher Lowton Stables in Devon, has sent out 2 winners this season, so the yard is capable of finding the right race for the right horse. The question is whether Benignitas can finally deliver one of those moments, or whether its story is one of a willing competitor who never quite got the job done.
