Benacre

The other thing that stands out is how reliable Benacre is over a specific trip. All six career wins have come over seven furlongs to a mile, and across 34 races at those distances it has won 18% of the time — roughly 1 in every 6. Stray outside that range and the results thin out quickly. Similarly, on normal ground it has won 3 of 17 races (again around 1 in 6), while wet or very fast conditions have so far yielded nothing. This is a horse with a clear profile: get the trip and the ground right, and you have a live contender.

Nowhere is that more apparent than at Epsom Downs. It has raced there just three times and won twice — a two-from-three record at one of Britain's most distinctive and demanding tracks is remarkable. That famously twisting, undulating course sorts horses out brutally, and Benacre clearly takes to it in a way most horses simply don't. The first win there came on 30 June 2022, and Epsom remains the course most associated with its best performances.

More recently, Benacre won at Newcastle in February 2026 — six months ago now — and has not added to its tally in the six races since, finishing fifth on three occasions in the last few outings. It is not a form collapse, more a horse that is running consistently without quite getting there. Trained by Charlie Johnston at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire — a yard that has sent out an impressive 131 winners this season alone — Benacre has every advantage in terms of preparation. Jockey Joe Fanning partners the horse most often, winning 1 of their 11 races together. A win is overdue, and if Epsom comes around again, the smart money says it won't wait too long.
