Beggars Rock

The first win came at Limerick on 28 December 2024, and the second followed at Kilbeggan on 16 May 2025. That second victory is now 12 months in the rear-view mirror, and the last six runs have not produced a win — a sequence of two sixth-place finishes and two thirds, bookended by a couple of blank days. The thirds are encouraging enough to suggest Beggars Rock is not far off, but the horse has not been able to get its nose in front when it matters.

The partnership with jockey Kevin Sexton is the most interesting statistical thread here. Together they have won 2 of their 13 races — roughly 1 in every 6 or 7 — which is a meaningfully better return than the horse's overall record suggests. When Sexton is in the saddle, Beggars Rock appears to perform closer to its ceiling, and that relationship will be worth watching if the pair line up together again.

Trainer Ian Patrick Donoghue operates out of Clonalvy in County Meath, and the yard is in decent form this season, having sent out 26 winners. Beggars Rock raced just yesterday, which tells you the team are keeping the horse active and clearly believe there is another win in it. At seven years old and with form showing consistent placings, the profile of a horse that finds a suitable opportunity and pounces is still very much alive. Whether that comes before the Kilbeggan victory slips into a 13-month drought is the question worth asking.
