Beat The Devil

Recent form paints a picture of a horse treading water. In its last six races, Beat The Devil has picked up three places—a fifth, sixth, and seventh—but has crossed the line in front of nobody. That eight-month gap since the Dundalk win in January is a long drought at this level. Jack Kearney, the horse's regular jockey, has ridden it in six races without getting into the winner's circle, which raises a question: whether a different partner might unlock something, or whether the horse simply lacks the class to win again at present.

Patrick Magee's Shercock yard has been productive this season, sending out eight winners, so the trainer is clearly working with able material. Whether Beat The Devil can reclaim the form that earned that lone victory, or whether it has already shown us its ceiling, remains to be seen. For now, it is a horse that flickers with potential at certain distances but has become a perennial also-ran—the type that turns up race after race, contributes the occasional place, and leaves everyone wondering what it might need to get back to the winner's circle.
