Trained out of Newmarket — the heartland of British flat racing, a town where serious horses are taken seriously — Battle Standard is in capable hands. Jack Morland's yard has sent out 14 winners already this season, which tells you this is not an operation that struggles to get horses ready to perform. That makes Battle Standard's blank record slightly harder to explain away. When a yard is clearly in good form, a horse that finishes 9th, 4th, and 10th is raising its own questions.

What's worth noting is that Battle Standard raced just one day ago, so this is a snapshot of a horse mid-campaign, not one that has been put away for the winter. At three years old, there is time and room to improve — young horses often take several races simply to learn what racing actually is. But with nothing to show from three attempts so far, the next run needs to show something more convincing than a single mid-table finish.
