Basilette

What makes Basilette interesting is not her overall record but where she wins. Put her in a longer race — anything over two miles — and her record transforms. She has won four of her fourteen starts at that distance, a 29 per cent win rate that is nearly three times better than her career average. Even more striking is her affinity for Stratford-on-Avon: she has won three of nine races there, including her most recent victory six weeks ago. For a horse that has won only five times in 35 attempts overall, claiming three victories at a single track is the kind of specialist form that makes trainers sit up and plan their season around it.

Her recent form shows the ups and downs typical of a horse doing honest work in the middle tiers. Her last six races read: a win, a third place, a sixth, a fourth, a third again, and just yesterday a second. She is clearly active and being campaigned regularly by her yard. The trainer has put her on a winter break now but plans to bring her back for the summer months, waiting for ground conditions to suit — fast, dry ground brings out her best, and she will run both on the Flat and over hurdles. With a handicap mark as low as 49, there remains room for her to find races within her compass when she returns to training in February.

George Downing, her most regular jockey, has won just once from eleven rides aboard her, though that partnership may be incidental — the real pattern in Basilette's record is not about who rides her but where the race is held and how far she has to run. She is a horse that has found her niche, and her yard clearly understands it well enough to keep bringing her back to the same ground and course. That kind of consistency, however modest the prize money, is how lesser-known horses earn their keep.
